Companies inevitably face the problem of high employee absenteeism. In particular, unexpected sick leave often creates difficulties in staff scheduling and is also one of the reasons why projects cannot be completed on time.
In the UK, there are approximately 180 million sick leave days each year, with an estimated 27 million days being falsely claimed. This issue is even more significant in call centers, where employee absenteeism rates are relatively high regardless of whether employees are full-time or part-time.
Successful Case
As a result, some call centers in the UK developed the concept of “Duvet Day” to reduce employee turnover. A telephone interview center located in Swindon, UK, has successfully applied this concept and has increased employee attendance rates over the years.

Employees at this company each receive 30 paid vacation days. When employees do not want to go to work, they can directly use these 30 days of leave entitlement. If they wake up in the morning and feel that they do not want to work, whether they are recovering from a hangover or simply want to sleep longer, they can call the call center to request leave. No reason is required, and the leave request will be approved.
Flexible Working Hours
More and more companies are beginning to implement flexible working hour policies. The concept of Duvet Days is an extension of this idea.
Some companies also accommodate employees’ personal needs. For example, employees can leave the office temporarily when they need to handle matters at a bank, or parents who need to pick up their children from school can adjust their working hours to meet these needs.
Similarly, if you suddenly do not feel like working in the morning, you can call and request to come to the office in the afternoon instead.
Implementing this type of policy can improve employees’ service quality and attendance rates. Successful call centers or customer service centers create an environment where employees can manage themselves, resulting in better efficiency and higher service quality.
Response Policies
Duvet Days may seem like a great idea, but many supporting measures are required for it to be successfully and sustainably implemented.
The first issue is the company’s own staffing arrangements. Call centers must prepare proper employee scheduling before implementing this policy.
Companies can encourage attendance by providing employees with additional Duvet Days. For example, employees with perfect attendance for three months can receive one additional Duvet Day. However, this additional day must be requested in advance.
This encourages employees to maintain good attendance, and because the additional leave requires advance notice, it will not create staffing problems.
Avoiding Responsibility
Some people may think that this policy encourages employees to be lazy, but that is not the case.
Whether handling outbound calls or incoming customer inquiries, call center employees face considerable pressure. Appropriate rest can improve service quality and provide significant support for employees with special circumstances.
After all, losing an experienced employee can be a major loss for a company. The cost of recruiting and training a replacement may be even greater.
